How to make divorce the best thing that’s ever happened to you

Three women dancing at sunset, celebrating happiness and new beginnings after divorce

In a recent interview Jennifer Lopez opened up about her previous relationships and said that her divorce was the best thing to ever happen to her.

She’s widely known for high profile relationships and moving on quickly to the next partner after the end of a relationship. But after her divorce from Ben Afleck last year, she’s been on her own personal healing journey.

She took the time to reflect on her past relationships, the patterns she’s repeated and what she’s learnt about herself.

She didn’t rush into another relationship.
Instead she focused on herself.
With the right support – therapists, coaches, the whole team – she began breaking old patterns and discovering what she truly needed.

And that’s when she took full responsibility for her own behaviour and the choices she’d made.

Through therapy she acknowledged that she didn’t love herself and did the work so that she could reach a place of self-acceptance

She took responsibility for her own behaviour and the choices she’s made.

And now she knows herself and appreciates herself – “I know who I am, and I just really appreciate that person and feel really comfortable and good in being myself – all the good parts and all of the complicated things.”

This Might Feel Miles Away Right Now

I know right now it might feel like your life’s fallen apart, because I’ve been there. And if someone had told me at the time that my divorce would be the best thing that’s ever happened to me, I would have laughed in their face.

There’s no way I could ever have imagined that being the case… but it is.

t was the toughest thing I’d ever been through… but it also became the turning point I didn’t know I needed. It was an opportunity for growth, learning and a reassessment of my life and everything that made me happy.

What came out of my divorce

  • I found my passion and started my own business – something I’d dreamed of since university
  • I discovered my love of wildlife photography which has led to adventures all over the world and brought incredible new friendships into my life.
  • I found love again – after believing that there was only one chance at love in your lifetime
  • I learnt so much about myself – rebuilt my confidence, learned how to meet my own needs, and stopped outsourcing my happiness.
  • And I came out the other side feeling so much happier and stronger.

So, if you’re questioning your relationship, reeling from a breakup you didn’t see coming, or struggling to get your life back on track after a breakup or divorce… I want you to know that divorce can be a turning point for you.

It’s not the end… but the beginning of your next, most powerful chapter.

You can come through this feeling more confident, grounded and fulfilled than you ever thought possible.

Here’s how to start

One of the hardest parts of divorce is the loss of the future you thought you were building.
The plans you’d made together.
The future you could picture so clearly.
And suddenly… it’s all gone.

No matter how capable or successful you are in other parts of your life… divorce can leave you feeling like you’re starting from scratch.
It’s not that you don’t want to move forward.
It’s that you don’t know how or even what you’re moving towards anymore.

But here’s the truth:
You don’t have to figure it all out right now.
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going.

You just need to take the next step.

5 Powerful ways to make divorce the best thing that’s ever happened to you

1. Rewrite your story

This is how you take your power back.  Even if your divorce wasn’t your decision… it doesn’t define you… and you get to decide what happens next. This can be an opportunity for you to get honest about what you want, who you are, and what you’re no longer here for in future.

2. Let go of the pressure to have it all figured out

There’s no time frame for getting over a breakup… it can’t be rushed. You need to take the time to heal, or it will just come back to bite you later on. You don’t need to map out your whole life… just focus on the next step to take that’s going to move you forward and make you feel better.

3. Build your support team

Even though you’re strong and capable, this isn’t the time to go it alone. Having the right support around you (like a coach, therapist, or close friends) helps you fast-track your recovery and get your life back on track as quickly as possible.

4. Reconnect with who you are

So many of my clients, particularly women, have lost sight of what actually makes them happy in life. They’re so used to putting everything and everyone else before their own needs that they’ve lost sight of what they want. This is your chance to reconnect with you – your passions, needs, boundaries and what makes you feel alive.

5. Create daily moments of joy

You don’t have to wait for your life to be ‘fixed’ to feel good again. Small conscious moments of joy… every day… can be your lifeline. And over time, these moments will snowball into something bigger than you ever expected.

To summarise

Divorce might feel like the end of everything you knew – but it can also be the beginning of something better.

It can be the best thing that’s ever happened to you.
A life that’s rooted in who you are now and better than you could ever imagine.
With the right support, clear steps, and space to figure out what you want, you can rebuild with confidence.
You don’t need to do it all at once – just begin with the next right step.
