How to choose the right divorce coach for you

When you’ve made the decision to work with a divorce coach – how do you choose the right one?

Divorce coaching is growing in popularity in the UK as more people experience the life-changing transformations that can happen with the right guidance. Finding the right person to support you during one of the most emotionally challenging chapters of your life is crucial.

10 Things to Look for When Choosing the Right Divorce Coach for You

Here are 10 key things to help you make an informed decision and choose the right divorce coach for you.

1. Trust and rapport

This is the most important factor. It’s essential that you feel safe, supported and able to speak freely without fear of judgement in your sessions. Be aware that coaching can bring up strong emotions, and you may find yourself sharing things you’ve never told anyone else. If you feel like you’re holding back, or filtering your words, that might be a sign they’re not the right coach for you.

2. Relevant experience

Some divorce coaches specialise in specific areas so it’s helpful to look for a coach who has worked with clients in similar situations to yours. Whether you’re navigating a high-conflict breakup, infidelity, domestic abuse, co-parenting challenges, or deciding whether to leave your relationship, they need to understand your world. Ask about their background and client stories to see if they’ve helped people with similar struggles.

3. Lived Experience

Whilst it’s not essential, I think that it’s invaluable to have a coach that has gone through their own divorce and come out the other side. It means they really understand the emotional rollercoaster, the fear, the grief and the confusion. They can empathise in a deeper way.

That said, make sure they’ve done their own healing work and they’re out the other side of their divorce. You want someone who can support you from a grounded, objective place so that they don’t get triggered by your discussions. It’s impossible for someone who is still navigating their own pain to support you appropriately.

4. Qualifications

Specialised training in divorce coaching is essential. It means they have the specific tools and techniques to support you. Being a qualified coach is also an advantage as they have a breadth of knowledge and experience. By training with a reputable provider and being a member of one of the professional coaching bodies, it means they have gone through rigorous training and assessment. Finally, look for evidence that they are they continually learning so that they can support their clients in the best possible way.

5. In person or online coaching

Think about whether you would prefer to meet in person or if you’re happy to have your sessions online. Whilst online coaching opens up more choice, some people prefer the space of getting out of their home or office. Also consider any travel time and how it fits into your schedule as you’re likely to be working together for a few months or more.

6. Their coaching style and structure

Every coach works differently and has a different approach. Whilst some coaches are very structured, goal-oriented and action-focused, others create a slower, more reflective space. Consider whether you prefer someone who’s direct or someone who has a gentler approach. Also consider the level of support that you feel you need between sessions and what that would look like. There’s no right or wrong with either approach, just what suits you best.

7. Their network of trusted professionals

It’s important to get your support team in place for your divorce but it can be hard to know where to turn. You might need legal advice, financial guidance, or therapeutic support. Does your coach have trusted contacts they can recommend – professionals they’ve worked with and received great feedback on from past clients? It helps when they can guide you to the right people to build up your team.

8. Client reviews and success stories

Testimonials and client stories give you a real sense of the coach’s impact. Can you relate to their past clients and their situations? Do their stories sound like yours? Look at the outcomes – not just how the client felt during the sessions, but what changed for them as a result of the coaching.

9. Budget and investment

Coaching fees can vary depending on the level of support offered, the coach’s experience, and how the programme is structured. Try not to view it as an hourly rate. It’s an investment in your emotional wellbeing, clarity, confidence, and ability to move forward.

What you’re really paying for is the transformation you want. This includes faster healing, less time feeling lost, and the strategy and support in building the next chapter of your life with intention.

10. Gut instinct

Sometimes, you just know. Take the time to pay attention to how you feel after your first conversation or call. Do you feel calmer? Heard? Supported? Seen? More positive? Your intuition matters, especially at a time when you may feel disconnected from it.

To summarise

Choosing the right divorce coach is a personal decision. Ensure that you do your research, explore their content online, and don’t be afraid to speak to a few people before making your decision.

This is an important decision and the right support can make all the difference to how you move through it.

A great divorce coach helps you to move forward rather than just processing what’s happened. If you want to see how this works in practice, here’s how I support my clients as a divorce coach in the UK.

Look for someone who can help you:

  • Get clear on what you want (even if you’re not sure yet)
  • Rebuild confidence and emotional strength
  • Create a vision for your future
  • Develop a strategy for navigating your divorce
  • Take actionable steps – not just talk

Likewise, you don’t need someone to just hold space. You also need someone who can help you shift, grow, and rebuild your life.
